The Swedish Songwriting Machine: How a Country of 10 Million Dominates Global Pop

With SEK 5.4 billion in music exports and STIM collecting SEK 3.3 billion in royalties, Sweden punches far above its weight in the global music industry.

Sweden is one of only four net exporters of music in the world, alongside the United States, the United Kingdom, and South Korea. For a country of roughly 10 million people, the numbers are staggering: Swedish music export revenue reached SEK 5.4 billion (approximately $500 million) in 2023, an 18% increase from the previous year. The Numbers

STIM, the Swedish Performing Rights Society, collected a record SEK 3.328 billion in royalty revenue in 2024, with 54% of that revenue — approximately SEK 1.8 billion — coming from international sources. As of the end of 2024, STIM represented 105,558 authors and 4,074 music publishers. In 2024 alone, 3,859 new music creators and publishers received their first royalty payments from STIM. Billboard Dominance

Since the mid-1990s, Swedish songwriters have at times been responsible for as much as 50% of the top 10 hits on the US Billboard chart. In 2014, 25% of the number-one hits on the American Billboard pop chart were written by Swedes. At the center of this phenomenon is Max Martin, who has written or co-written 29 Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles. [Sources: sweden.se, swedenabroad.se, Wikipedia]

The K-Pop Connection

Sweden's songwriting influence has also extended into K-pop. BELIFT LAB, a major South Korean record label, has stated: "Collaborating with songwriters from Sweden and the broader Nordic region is becoming increasingly important in the K-pop industry. Their music resonates deeply with Korean sensibilities, and their outstanding musical talent adds richness and texture to the K-pop sound." [Source: STIM / Cision]

Why Sweden?

A Spotify editorial explained the phenomenon: "From a creative perspective, Sweden has a well-developed music education system, with many young people learning to sing, play instruments, and write songs from an early age. There's a collective affinity for melodic pop sounds here thanks to popular music competitions like Melodifestivalen and the generational melodic wealth of ABBA's catalogue. And because many Swedish artists sing in English, their songs have a larger global appeal that has increased with the help of Spotify." [Source: newsroom.spotify.com, February 2025]

The Current Landscape

The top Swedish artists by monthly Spotify listeners as of early 2026 include Zara Larsson (68.5 million), ABBA (38.3 million), Avicii (37.7 million), and Swedish House Mafia (26.7 million). The 2023 data showed that 90% of Sweden's Top 10 singles were from local artists, and the country ranked as the 10th largest music exporter globally. [Sources: musicmetricsvault.com, IFPI]
